Basic Principles for Establishing a Functional Society

With founding the Sistema , formally known as the Foundation for the National Network of Youth and Children Orchestras of Venezuela, the Venezuelan José Antonio Abreu not only started one of the most successful music projects ever but at the same time defined the basic principles for establishing a functiona society:

Joy, motivation, team spirit, and joint striving for success.

According to Abreu material poverty can be defeated by spiritual wealth, which can deliver the psychic disposition, ethic principles, efficient and intellectual instruments to overcome poverty. Abreu expresses his guiding rationale, that music is an integral human expression. To give children a musical education therefore means to awaken their individual spirit, encourage them to improve their fortunes, to give them a better starting position in life. In this respect, music is politics by other means, an aspect of great importance in a country such as Venezuela.

This casts light on the important socializing functions of common cultural activities. Culture is mankind's natural place!
